Halloween

Halloween is one of the holidays that's celebrated primarily in North America, i.e. in the United States and Canada, but known to people all over the world. This became possible thanks to the numerous Hollywood movies exported to TV or cinema screens of other countries all over the world. Halloween is celebrated on the 31 of October and is also known as the eve of the All Saint's Day. The usual tradition on this day for children is to go to their neighbors' houses asking for treats by saying the famous expression "trick or treats". At parties, in offices or other places where festivities are held people are supposed to wear scary costumes and masks. One of the main attributes of this holiday is the famous jack-o'-lantern made of a pumpkin with cut-out eyes and mouth and usually with a candle inside. The origin of this symbol is most often connected with an Irish legend about an old farmer Jack, who was a fan of gambling and alcoholic drinks. He managed to deceive the devil twice by not giving his soul to him, so when the day of his death came, he could get neither to heaven (because of his vicious life) nor to hell (because the devil feared his slyness). That's why Jack was destined to knock about the world with a pumpkin instead of his head. This also explains why orange and black are the main colors on Halloween. Since recently Halloween has been also connected with not only trick-or-treating and pumpkin-carving, but also with watching horror movies (often directly connected with Halloween) and telling horror stories.
